The Atlanta Public School’s Day of Play for Girls is a special effort to engage middle school girls in a day full of physical activity and sports clinics. At this event, as many as 500 girls are introduced to sports through a series of physical activity clinics and wellness stations. In addition to addressing the long term benefits of fitness and nutrition, the APS Girls’ Day of Play will serve as a recruitment tool to encourage girls to participate in their middle school athletic teams. In 2011, only 15% of APS Middle School girls participated in sports. Following this event, the number increased to 22%, with the same young ladies participating in all sports.
